~てしまう: Completion & Regret

Use Vてしまう for complete/finished action and for unintended or regrettable outcomes.

35 min
Before you begin
  • て-form.
Why this matters

The same grammar can mean 'finish completely' or carry 'oops/unfortunately' nuance—very useful in incident narratives.

1. Context selects completion or unwanted-result nuance

Do not translate しまう mechanically as regret every time.

Two common readings
COMPLETION全部読んでしまいましたfinished reading it all
REGRET / ACCIDENTファイルを消してしまいましたaccidentally/unfortunately deleted the file
