を: Mark the Direct Object
Use を to mark the noun directly affected by a transitive action.
- Core verbs and object vocabulary.
English mostly relies on word order. Japanese marks roles explicitly. を tells you which noun is the direct object.
1. Find the verb first, then ask 'what?'
In コードを書きます, 書きます is the action. What is written? コード. Mark that noun with を.
2. Same role across different actions
The particle remains stable while noun and verb change.
Natural: I read email.
Structure: email — object — read.
Object is メール.
Natural: I write code.
Structure: code — object — write.
Object is コード.
Natural: I check the data.
Structure: data — object — check.
Object is データ.
Natural: I study Japanese.
Structure: Japanese — object — study.
Object is 日本語.
3. Japanese can omit obvious subjects
These examples do not need 私は every time. Japanese often omits information recoverable from context.
4. Object debugging homework
For ten actions, underline the verb first, ask what is affected, circle that noun, then insert を.
INTERACTIVE WORKSHEET
4. Object debugging homework
Write 10 sentences. Underline verbs, circle direct objects, box を. Include 5 technical/work and 5 everyday examples.
Tip: on a foldable or tablet, use your pen directly on the page. Your strokes are saved in this browser as you work.
4. Object debugging homework
Write 10 sentences. Underline verbs, circle direct objects, box を. Include 5 technical/work and 5 everyday examples.
5. Debug を in Language IDE
Swap objects and verbs while preserving semantic roles.
Language IDE
Why here: Particle-role visualization is one of the IDE's strongest uses.
How to use it for this lesson: Build コードを書きます. Swap コード→メール, then 書きます→読みます. Decide which combinations remain natural.
Debug direct objects →Mastery checkpoint
Answer from memory. Treat every miss as a debugging signal: inspect the explanation, repair the rule, and retry.
