の: Possession & Noun Linking

Use の to connect nouns so the first noun modifies or specifies the second.

25 min
Before you begin
  • A practical noun vocabulary from 1-1, 1-6, and 1-9.
Why this matters

Professional Japanese constantly links nouns: company employee, project document, test environment, today's meeting. の is one of the most productive tools for building these relationships.

1. Think A の B = B associated with A

Japanese places the specifying noun before の and the main noun after it. A の B is structurally 'A's B' or 'B of/associated with A.' English may translate the relationship as possession, category, affiliation, or description.

company employee 会社の社員 かいしゃ の しゃいん

Natural: company employee

Structure: company — of — employee

Affiliation, not literal physical possession.

project documents プロジェクトの資料 プロジェクト の しりょう

Natural: project documents

Structure: project — of — materials

Association.

test result テストの結果 テスト の けっか

Natural: test result

Structure: test — of — result

A very common technical relationship.

my computer 私のパソコン わたし の パソコン

Natural: my computer

Structure: me — of — computer

True possession.
