Why this matters

Work status changes over time: 'It is a test,' 'It was a test,' 'It wasn't production.' Learning the noun tense matrix gives you a compact way to report prior identity/state.

1. Learn the four-form matrix

For noun sentences, です is present affirmative, ではありません is present negative, でした is past affirmative, and ではありませんでした is past negative. Colloquial alternatives exist, but this polite matrix is a clean beginner baseline.
