Noun Past Tense: でした / ではありませんでした
Move polite noun statements between present and past, affirmative and negative.
- X は Y です pattern.
Work status changes over time: 'It is a test,' 'It was a test,' 'It wasn't production.' Learning the noun tense matrix gives you a compact way to report prior identity/state.
1. Learn the four-form matrix
For noun sentences, です is present affirmative, ではありません is present negative, でした is past affirmative, and ではありませんでした is past negative. Colloquial alternatives exist, but this polite matrix is a clean beginner baseline.
2. Status-report examples
Use the matrix to describe what something was, not just what it is now.
Natural: This was a test.
Structure: As for this — test — was.
A past classification.
Natural: Yesterday was release day.
Structure: As for yesterday — release day — was.
Useful calendar/status context.
Natural: This was not the production environment.
Structure: As for this — production environment — was not.
A valuable correction pattern.
