や / とか: Non-Exhaustive Examples
Distinguish exhaustive と from representative や and conversational とか.
- Basic noun particle と.
Real lists are often examples rather than complete inventories: logs, screenshots, documents, tests, meetings, hobbies.
1. Choose list semantics intentionally
と tends toward A and B as the listed set; や and とか mean A, B, and things like that.
2. Use open lists
Study the examples and identify the structural pattern before relying on the English translation.
Natural: I'll check logs, screenshots, and so on.
Structure: logs and-things-like screenshots object check
Representative noun list.
Natural: On weekends I like things like movies and games.
Structure: movies-like games-like liked
Conversational examples.
3. Inventory semantics worksheet
Write 12 lists and choose と, や, or とか based on whether the list is closed or representative.
