Clock Time
Ask and state basic clock time using 時 and 分, including the most important reading changes.
- Numbers 1–100.
Meetings, stand-ups, deployments, support windows, and deadlines all require time. This is one of the earliest immediately useful professional grammar domains.
1. Hours use 時（じ）
Attach 時 to the hour: 3時 = さんじ. Ask 何時ですか（なんじですか）. Several hour readings use し: 4時 is よじ, 7時 is しちじ, and 9時 is くじ.
2. Minutes use 分 with ふん / ぷん changes
Minute readings alternate between ふん and ぷん, with sound changes such as いっぷん, さんぷん, ろっぷん, はっぷん, じゅっぷん. Learn time as complete expressions rather than assuming the base number pronunciation remains untouched.

Structure: nine-o'clock five-minutes
A simple meeting time.
Natural: 10:10
Structure: ten-o'clock ten-minutes
Notice じゅっぷん.
Natural: 3:30
Structure: three-o'clock half
半 means half; very common for :30.
3. Read a meeting schedule
Treat these like calendar entries. Say the Japanese time aloud before reading the English.

Write six calendar times and their Japanese readings. Include 4:00, 7:00, 9:05, 10:10, 10:30, and one time from your actual workday.
