Want Someone to Do
Use person に + Vてほしい to express wanting another person to perform an action.
- Vて-form, 欲しい, and に for targets/participants.
This bridges personal desire and collaboration: I want Tanaka to check it, I want the team to review the document. It also requires tone awareness in professional settings.
1. The desired actor takes に; the desired action takes てほしい
2. Express desired collaboration
[{'label': 'I want Tanaka to check it.', 'sample': '田中さんに確認してほしいです。' I want the team to read this document.', 'sample': 'チームにこの資料を読んでほしいです。' , 'natural': {'en': 'I want the team to read this document.', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': 'team target — this document read-て — desired', 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Team request/desire.', 'es': 'Observa si la oración describe una acción, un estado resultante, un deseo, un intento o una preparación.'}}, {'label': 'I want the teacher to explain it again.', 'sample': '先生にもう一度説明してほしいです。'
3. Wanting is not the same as politely requesting
~てほしい expresses your desire about someone else's action. Depending on relationship, directly saying it may sound strong. For an actual request, ~てください, ~てもらえますか, etc. may be more appropriate later.
4. Collaboration intent sheet
Write eight sentences about actions you would like teammates, teachers, or fictional collaborators to perform. Then rewrite four as direct ~てください requests and compare the tone/meaning.
INTERACTIVE WORKSHEET
4. Collaboration intent sheet
Annotate DESIRE vs REQUEST.
Tip: on a foldable or tablet, use your pen directly on the page. Your strokes are saved in this browser as you work.
4. Collaboration intent sheet
Annotate DESIRE vs REQUEST.
5. Debug actor vs object roles
This pattern is easy to confuse because に marks the desired actor while を can still mark the action's object.
Language IDE
Why here: Role visualization helps prevent person/object confusion.
How to use it for this lesson: Build
Answer from memory. Use every miss to identify the exact form or meaning distinction that needs another pass.
