~てはいけません: Prohibition

Use Vてはいけません to state that an action is not permitted.

30 min
Before you begin
  • て-form and permission pattern.
Why this matters

Rules and safety language matter in professional environments: do not use production, do not delete this file, do not enter, do not change the setting.

1. Permission and prohibition share the same て-form base

Vてもいいです = doing V is okay. Vてはいけません = doing V is not allowed. Compare the wrapper while keeping the action identical.

Same action, opposite policy
使ってもいいですallowed to use
使ってはいけませんmust not / may not use
変更してもいいですallowed to change
変更してはいけませんmust not / may not change
