~ている: Ongoing Action & Continuing State
Use Vている / Vています for actions in progress and recognize common state/result meanings.
- Track 5 て-form.
This is core status language: I am testing, the server is running, I live in Florida, I know that person.
1. Attach いる to the て-form
Vて + います gives a polite ongoing/state expression.
2. Ongoing actions are the easiest case
If the action can be happening right now, ~ています often corresponds to English '-ing'.
Natural: I'm writing code now.
Structure: now — code write-て — exist
Current action.
Natural: The team is testing.
Structure: team topic — test-て — exists
Team status.
Natural: I'm investigating the logs.
Structure: logs object — investigate-て — exists
Debugging.
3. Some verbs describe the resulting/continuing state
住んでいます means 'live/reside', 知っています means 'know', 結婚しています means 'is married'. Do not force English progressive '-ing' onto every ~ている expression.
Natural: I live in Florida.
Structure: Florida at — live-て — exists
Continuing residence.
Natural: I know that person.
Structure: that person object — know-て — exists
Continuing knowledge.
4. Negative is ~ていません
The いる portion carries the polite negative.
Natural: I'm not using it now.
Structure: now topic — use-て — not-exist
Negative ongoing.
5. Status classifier worksheet
Write twelve ~ています sentences and classify each as ACTION NOW, REPEATED/HABITUAL, or CONTINUING STATE. Include at least four technical examples.
INTERACTIVE WORKSHEET
5. Status classifier worksheet
Create 12 ~ています examples and label interpretation. Then convert 4 to ~ていません.
Tip: on a foldable or tablet, use your pen directly on the page. Your strokes are saved in this browser as you work.
5. Status classifier worksheet
Create 12 ~ています examples and label interpretation. Then convert 4 to ~ていません.
6. Debug ~ている in Language IDE
Separate transformation from interpretation.
Language IDE
Why here: The syntax is simple but the meaning depends on verb semantics/context.
How to use it for this lesson: Build 書く→書いて→書いています and 知る→知って→知っています. Label FORM vs INTERPRETATION.
Debug ~ている →Mastery checkpoint
Answer from memory. Use every miss to identify the exact form or meaning distinction that needs another pass.
